Jamie Lee Curtis says: Do More Than Cross Your Fingers

Sep 27, 2010

Message from Jamie Lee Curtis:

Last September, I asked folks in the American Red Cross community to share what’s in their emergency preparedness kits. The ideas they gave were useful and some of them, very original!

"iPhone and charger, food to share, books and more books, sweats!" – Sue, NJ

“Pack food and any needed medications for your pets.” – Judy, NC

“Bible, bed pillow, family pictures, etch a sketch to be creative.” – Carol, IN

"Personal items that remind you of home, such as family pictures." – William, MS

"Cash in small bills and coins." – Dennis, IL

In my kit, I’ve got family photos, dental floss (my dentist loves me), and shoes with really sturdy soles on them. When you live in earthquake country like I do, broken glass is the first thing you’ve got to be ready for.

Think about your emergency kit, including the things that make your kit, your kit. With September being National Preparedness Month, there’s no better time to make sure we do more than cross our fingers, to be ready for severe weather and other emergency threats.

If your kit is already organized, packed and ready: Congratulations! Think about making an emergency plan that considers all the places your loved ones are – home, college, the workplace. And stay informed too.
