American Red Cross Service to Armed Forces Expands
Jan 4, 2010
Hattiesburg, MS December 30, 2009 - The South Central MS Chapter of the American Red Cross has been awarded a grant to expand its Service to the Armed Forces program at Camp Shelby.
The Service to the Armed Forces grant allows the chapter to expand its support of the Family Assistance Center on post. The grant will also afford the Red Cross an opportunity to establish services at the post medical center. Due to the number of soldiers rotating through Camp Shelby, close to 15,000 a year, both of these programs are a critical part of the American Red Cross mission to serve the military and their families.
The Chapter is pleased to welcome Sandy Henderson and Nicole Hunt to the Service to the Armed Forces program. They will assist the Camp Shelby programs as well as providing outreach to military families in the Chapter’s jurisdiction.
The South Central MS Chapter has also welcomed Colonel Woodrow Lyon, USA, Ret. to the Board of Directors. A previous Post Commander for Camp Shelby, Lyon is leading the chapter’s newly formed Service to the Armed Forces Committee and has been instrumental in guiding this effort.
Beginning in January, the chapter will be holding informational meetings, making contacts with Family Readiness Groups across its 12 county jurisdiction, and recruiting volunteers who would be interested in serving those who serve our country. Anyone interested in becoming a Service to the Armed Forces Volunteer is encouraged to contact the chapter at 601-582-8151.
