Red Cross Honors Heroes During March is Red Cross Month

Mar 5, 2009

March is Red Cross Month, and, to celebrate, the South Central Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross is honoring local HEROES: those who make a difference through the Red Cross, and others, including firemen, police officers, teachers, nurses and other “ordinary” people who have accomplished something “extraordinary.”

“HEROES for the American Red Cross” is a grassroots campaign in which local business people, school groups, church groups, civic clubs and individuals pledge to raise $1,000, through any legal means they choose, for the local Red Cross Chapter. This year, the South Central Mississippi Chapter has set its sights on raising $100,000 during the month of March. The funds will be used to support Red Cross services such as disaster relief, assistance for fire victims, emergency military communications, first aid and CPR training and disaster preparedness information for our community. Monies raised will support Covington, Forrest, Greene, Jefferson Davis, Lamar, Marion, Perry, Stone and Walthall counties.

“Without our local HEROES, the people who donate their time, blood and financial resources, the Red Cross wouldn’t be able to do what we do everyday—help local residents prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  Without our HEROES we wouldn’t be able to help disaster victims here in our own community, much less victims across the country, or even around the world,” said Ward Conville, Board Chairman of the South Central MS Chapter. “Just last year in the South Central nine county area we trained 3,888 of our neighbors in lifesaving skills in first aid, CPR and aquatic safety, and provided financial assistance to purchase emergency clothing and food to 280 families who lost their homes to fire or sustained major damage to their homes.”

The South Central Mississippi Chapter has scheduled a number of activities planned for March’s Heroes Campaign including a kick-off with a breakfast on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 9am at the Girl Scout Troop Activity Center that will honor your Chapter’s 2008 HEROES and a celebration luncheon on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 12pm at the USM Thad Cochran Center to close the campaign.
