Yazoo City, MS Monday, April 26, 2010—The American Red Cross is providing shelter, food, and comfort to people across Mississippi as they deal with the aftermath of the deadly tornadoes that swept through the area over the weekend. Damage is widespread from the tornadoes that touched down Saturday and thousands of residents are without power. The American Red Cross has partnered with the Haitian National Red Cross Society to reduce deaths attributed to malaria and malnutrition.  Haiti has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere, much of which has been attributed to the threats of malaria and insufficient diet.  The propensity for hurricanes and other natural disasters to strike the country create an additional health and safety burden. Explosion Rocks Small Community. American Red Cross Volunteers Respond

On November 1, the Carmichael community in Clarke county was shaken. Following an explosion on a Dixie Gas pipeline, five homes were destroyed. The American Red Cross, Key Chapter (Meridian, MS) was immediately contacted to assist.
